The Selfie Chronicles: Savannah

The Best Selfie Spots You’ll Find in Savannah

When we aren’t on the road traveling to festivals, you can catch us hanging around our home base of Savannah, Georgia. If you come to visit, there are countless locations to take rad selfies at. These places will make your social media stand out and upgrade your selfie game (WARNING: Your friends will be jealous.) We’re going to let you in on our secret spots and favorite murals around our city! (Pssst- the links to our dope fits are included too!)

1. Welcome to Savannah

sav1.jpg
sav2.jpg

This mural is located on the side of a retro hotel called The Thunderbird Inn, and only .4 miles from our store! Of course we have to start out with this mural, which gives off some major 1950’s postcard vibes with it’s bright colors and images. The artist, Kipper Millsap, was inspired by Historic Downtown Savannah for the paintings within each letter. There’s a parking lot at the hotel, which allows for you to park then walk around to the side of the building for your photoshoot!

COP OUR LOOK: Autumn styled our Dibs on the Drummer graphic tee with the All Seeing Eye shorts.

2. SCAD’s Montgomery Hall

tiger1.jpg

Go check out this sixty-six foot tall, abstract wall at 50th Street and Montgomery. Created by Matt Hebermehl, this wall has been around since 2013. The colors here are fun and vibrant, which is why we love it so much! You’ll stand out against this background and all eyes will be on your photos. Can’t forget to mention that there is parking right around the corner too!

COP OUR LOOK: Liz modeled the Easy Tiger yellow graphic with the Orange you Glad shorts.

3. SAFE Mural

mural3.jpeg
mural4.png

This mural is a little hidden, but totally worth finding. The location is 2217 Bull Street, and it was created by Tommy May & Brian Chegini back when this building was an art gallery in 2016. The funky patterns and contrast of red & blue gives you a lot to work with here! Our look was planned to be just black and white so it would stand out against the colors, but of course we couldn’t resist adding a red bandana and a hat!

COP OUR LOOK: You can shop our I bang the keys graphic here, and the black tribal set here.

4.  Revolution Yoga Studio

bird1.jpeg
bird2.jpeg

This Yoga studio has more to offer than just yoga, and it isn’t more than 3 minutes away from the Montgomery Hall mural! On the side of this building is a painted bird, which was created by a local artist named Jose Ray. Get interesting and mix it up with your angles here, because there's a bike rack right by the mural. Bethany modeled like a pro and posed by sitting on it!

COP OUR LOOK: Bethany wore the “strangers” graphic, which is currently unreleased, paired with the Western Print shorts. A similar graphic can be found here.

5. The Corner of 41st and Bull St

mural5.png
mural6.jpeg

This is a smaller mural, but we love the different patterns & color scheme going on here! It’s also a two-in-one since one building over is the Georgia Bees mural! I’d hit this mural early in the day for the best lighting, and before the sun blinds you in the late afternoon.

COP OUR LOOK: Scout modeled the Take a Trip graphic tee and Western Print shorts because the contrast it has against the cool-toned wall is killer!

6. Bee Mural

bee1.jpeg
bee2.jpeg

Posing by the Georgia Bees Mural, on Whitaker and 41st, you have to bring out that angle creativity since the artwork is so high up on the building. Already being so close to the cool-toned abstract mural, there’s no reason you shouldn’t give it a shot and play with the camera angles at this location too! Save the bees, am I right? This mural was created by Mary Lacy in 2017, so it hasn’t been around as long as some of these other ones either!

COP OUR LOOK: Liz is our save the bees queen, so she posed in front of this mural and modeled the same outfit as shown by Montgomery Hall.

7. The Blue Door

wings1.png
wings2.png

This little restaurant has a super cool mural of blue wings on the side of the building! There is a parking lot on the property, so it’s super easy to drive here for your photos. Seriously, who doesn’t love a fun wing mural?!

COP OUR STYLE: Bethany is wearing the Vanman Tee with the Yellow Bandana Shorts

8. Mushrooms and Dots

spots1.png
spot2.png

Now this isn’t a mural like the other posts, but bare with me because it’s still a dope photo-op. This location has different backgrounds and angles to work with, and I feel like we hardly scratched the surface!

COP OUR STYLE: Autumn modeled sitting in from of the awesome polka-dot door, wearing the Woodstock Ticket Tee & Western Print Skort. Liz and Claire posted up against the fence with the ceramic mushrooms, red fence, and blue stripe on the wall really setting the scene. On the left, Liz rocks the Have A Nice Jay trucker hat, No Rush Bus tee, and All Seeing Eye shorts. On the right, Claire styled the Nice Bass shirt with shorts from the Patchwork Boho Set.

9. Faux Rainbow Row

row1.png
row2.png

Ok so I know this one isn’t a mural either, but check out these colors! Savannah is FULL of beautiful walls and parks, but if you want to find it all at once then you need to head on over to 508 E Bryan Street! The pink, blue, and green pastels are so pretty and give you the chance to really stand-out against them! There is pay-to-park along the street, but if you’re just planning to stop by for you photoshoot I’d recommend keeping an eye on your car and saving those dollars to spend on something else! ;)

We love exploring our sweet Savannah to find the next best photo-ops. Let us know if you’ve visited these before and tell us if you have any different favs!

My Sweet Savannah Summer

Going into my summer internship at Mamie Ruth, I was expecting to learn about the ever-changing industry of retail. During the past few months, I have gained hands on experience with everything from setting up a vendor tent (or three) to how to design and print a graphic tee to social media marketing to processing data analytics-- and the applicable experience gained certainly does not stop there. (I will seriously be spending a week updating my LinkedIn.) However, what I was not expecting was to be loved on and inspired by a group of gals who I had previously not known but now don’t want to attend a music festival without. ;) Individually, we are all so different- coming from different schools and states, majors, possessing different personality types and astrology signs, different life experiences. Yet, together we’re a recipe for ingenuity and, of course, a good time. Not sure how our Boss Babe, Emily, got this lucky TBH.

For those of you who weren’t so #blessed to spend a summer in Savannah with these girls, here’s a little insight as to what each of them brought to our creative table and my heart (cheesy, I know) :

Autumn: Autumn is our Savannah guide- knowing all the best spots for brunch or a night out. (Congress Street, duh!) She is trendy, teaching me the power look that is a white tee, jean shorts, sneakers, AND a denim jacket, and for that I am forever grateful. She is also our social media guru and officially a certified Bonnaroo Queen. Being a recent graduate, Autumn is now embarking on her journey of finding a career and I cannot wait to see where this industry takes her. (Hopefully somewhere with a festival so that she can be our host for our next Mamie Reunion!)

Bethany: Bethany is unapologetically herself- a spunky, Florence-obsessed, icon in a Gunne Sax dress. She has more talent between her and a sewing machine than I have in my whole body. (Pictures of her Vintage Rework collection coming soon...hehe) I cannot wait to one day be sitting front row for her designer show at NYFW.

Liz: I love Liz’s graphic design work almost as much as she loves red wine and her dog, Penny Lane. Liz is always, always Miss Positivity, no matter the situation. She has been the voice that pushed us through the end of a hard day at both the office and Firefly Fest. Thank you for motivating me to always BEE better, gal. (Oh and, roll vols!)

Shelbi: Shelbi is our Mamie Mama. She seamlessly plotted out and guided us through our summer of success. This was her second year with Mamie, so she’s kinda, like, really smart. She’s humorous, genuine, and never afraid to tell ya when to, kindly, ‘shut-upppp’. Shelbi is one of the most hard working gals I know- keep grindin’ sis.

And last but not least...the woman herself

Emily: Emily is my tequila lovin’, fellow Saddlebags cowgirl- and the ultimate boss babe. She’s kind of like the Wizard of Oz, being the woman behind it all- designer, owner, and continuous entrepreneur. Emily has showed us the importance of hard work, dedication, and sticking true to who you are, even in the face of adversity. Emily’s commitment to her craft is unmatched. Additionally, she has been our outlet to vent to emotionally and creatively, has pushed us when needed while still leaving us our space to grow, and she has, and will continue to, serve as a role model.

In summary, I had a badass summer.

Xoxo,

Scout

Lifestyle Blogger I Olivia Ewing

Olivia Ewing may be from Rogersville, Tennessee a town based on the bible belt of the Southeast but she’s far from the small town persona one might think. Her genuine charm and energy were almost contagious when we got the chance to sit down with her a few weeks ago. With bright eyes looking towards the new year for her lifestyle blog, growing her skillset in all things digital, and graduating from SCAD; this is one rad gal who’s bound to make it big.

What made you want to come to Savannah, GA?

I always wanted to go to study Fashion since I've been in High school but I never really knew what school was best. I checked out Parsons, FIT, and SCAD because I had a friend from my hometown whose a year older than me. His names Stephen he studies Fashion Design at SCAD. I saw he was at SCAD and it was closer to home and not in New York because my other two options were in New York because its a big leap at 18 to go from living in a small town with six thousand people to living in NYC. I did the SCAD day tour, and my mom and I fell in love with the school and everything it had to offer.

What got you into styling and blogging? I was looking at your blog and whole platform and found it was seamless when navigating through it which I appreciated. Going to your Instagram, I liked that you have more extended captions then the average blogger.

Olivia: I've always loved writing; my mom studied journalism and my moms also super fabulous. Since I can remember I've been exposed to style, being super girly wearing heels when I was little. The little clear plastic ones. I've liked dress up because of my mom's influence. So as she began to study journalism, I learned that I had a more natural talent in writing. I won a couple writing contests in High School, finding that I was good at storytelling. One of them being about a fashion show and I received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC. From here is where I started my blog at 17 but in my hometown, it's more sport driven, and no attention is paid to the arts community. So some people told me that's great you're doing your own thing and others were rude to me saying that I cared too much about my appearance. We don't care about what you wear so why are your writing about it? And I just thought no one asked you to care; I'm developing my style. This is where I started by combining my love of creative writing and storytelling connecting to my passion for clothes whether it be styling something that's not always done with outfits. It's a way I feel I can express myself without physically having to talk to people because I'm not always the best at talking to people right off the bat. I wouldn't say, I'm, an introvert but I find it hard sometimes in developing the instant relationship, so when people see what I'm wearing they can get a better vibe of my personality. I'm a huge advocate on first impressions, so I kind of just put all those things together

That's amazing! So, who is your audience and what do you want them to take away from your blog?

Olivia: This is the biggest question I struggle with is finding out who my audience is still. I have a bit who follow me from high school because they've supported me since I began the blog but they're not too interested in the fashion individually. Then I have. SCAD students who do care about the style and want to learn more about the companies I work with because they live here and absorb this information. So it's hard for me to balance the two and that's why I have a lifestyle blog because I want to try and reach to as many people as possible. If I can have a post that relates to five people each time then, I feel like my job is done. If that audience grows then great but as long as I can reach someone who is appreciating what I'm writing then that's all I care about. I don't want to try and hone my target audience too much since my blog is so broad. I think once it starts to grow a little more I'll have a precise definition of whose responding the most. Right now, I got responses from people who like my food posts, and Mom's saying "Oh my gosh I need to go to this restaurant with my girlfriends" they probably aren't focusing too much on my outfit. Its all over the place but I feel that's how a lifestyle blog is.

That's cool you have that age range.

Olivia: Its funny, because my blog is primarily focused at the woman, not for any particular reason just because I am a woman and that's who I write for, but my viewership is mostly men which I found interesting viewing my analytics the other day. That made me feel good seeing that I'm not excluding anyone. Maybe they're getting information out of my food posts or my local To-do lists.

What's your favorite part of the process whether it be traveling to different places or writing? Is it all of it in combination?

Olivia: It is all of it, but I do have such a passion for storytelling even if it's just through styling an outfit. I always want there to be a story with it. I think at the end of the day every blogger is and should be a writer because anyone can take pictures of things they like on Instagram and post them. That's awesome; I know plenty of people who do that and don't have a professional platform. I think if you go the extra step of having a website and being a blogger then you should focus on your writing. Pretty pictures can help lye on Instagram or Pinterest if your going to take that extra step be the storyteller.  That's what I focus on, even with my patrons on Instagram I make my posts as long as possible and getting people to engage as much as I can. I love trying to get people interested and talking about things. Getting the conversation going.

How do you feel about hashtags?

Olivia: I do hashtags on all of my pictures, I've done it for awhile so I've never looked to see what my pictures would do without them because I'm kind of terrified. It leaves an open door  because as long as you have hashtags your photos there always searchable through people who search through hashtags. Im someone that does search through them, i'll go to the instagram hashtag search box and I’ll type in things that i'm interested in looking for or type in the name of the restaurant I want to go to. I always look at everyones post that has been there. Its just how I am on Instagram so Im sure Im not the only one in America or in the world that does that. So, I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity if I didn't include them.

What’s the direction you see your blog going into the new year and what resolutions do you have yourself?

For 2018, I’m truly focusing on growth. Growth within my blog, growth within my portfolio and styling abilities, and growth in my wellness practices whether that be eating cleaner or adding more exercise into my schedule than the previous year. Specifically for my blog I’d like to add mixed media such as GIFS, films, and motion graphics to truly expand my skill set and differentiate myself. I’d really like to push myself outside of any norms I’ve created and truly challenge myself this year. There’s no growth in the comfort zone!

For Our Tiny Hippies

Greetings to my tiny hippies. You're probably wondering how we got our newest Wishing on Weeds models to strike a pose. Well a little bit of candy and good music pretty much brings out the happy in anyone. So with that being said, here are some tips to get the little dandelions to strike that candid pose like a true star.

Step 1:
This step is super easy. Sugar. This will be the one time you want these kiddos to get a sugar high so you can capture those joyous moments of running around and just being free. So pack some lollipops as they don't make much mess and let the sugar take care of the rest!

ymke_franssen_WOW-12.jpg

Step 2:
Follow their lead. If you constantly tell them what to do they will eventually get restless. You're wanting to capture their true youthful personality so let them dance to the beat of their own drum. You're more likely to capture something even better than a planned pose this way.

ymke_franssen_WOW-4.jpg
ymke_franssen_WOW-6.jpg

Step 3:
Make them feel at home. Creating an environment where a kid feels like they can play and be themselves is going to give you much better photographs. So have fun with this step! Make it vibrant, find some stuffed animals or silly hats, throw around some crayons. Play some music and have a dance party! Get in the mind of a child. What was your favorite thing to do when you were young?

Now you're ready to go and capture the precious moments only tiny little hippies can give.

XOXO - Hannah Wardlaw

Wishing on Weeds

Wild as a dandelion blowing freely in the breeze, you close your eyes and make a wish hoping time will freeze. But just like a weed they keep growing taller with each day, so hold on to that little hand and in your heart babies they will stay.

We design cool and comfy threads for your infectiously free-spirited kiddo.  They grow like a weed so put them in clothes that will grow with them.  Each garment is made to stretch and move with your little mover and shaker.  So let them run and play and roll around in the mud because they will grow up before you know it.  Every garment is machine washable so dirt won't hurt your budget either.
